NUF Test
The NUF test is used to quickly gage the quality of an idea by assessing if the concept is New (not been attempted before) Useful (does it solve the problem?) or Feasible (is this possible to do?) by scoring each idea out of 5 next to each of the categories. The link to the right goes to the full NUF testing table.
To conclude, the ideas to go forward from this process are Screen Glaze / Reading (in m) on phone case informing of distance to nearest crossing / colour indication bar of how fast traffic is travelling / backpack with constricting straps to warn pedestrian of potential danger / headphones with automatically quietening music at road side / only one ear bud in the headset / Walking through arch installation at lights |
De Bono's 6 Hats
The ideas created using the Crawford Slip Brainstorming Method were then reviewed (by the same group) using De Bono's 6 Hats Method.
Three categories were written above the post it notes. These were good, neutral, and bad. De Bono’s six thinking hats were used to sort the ideas by considering each post it in turn, and going in a clockwise fashion around the group to hear every perspective of the coloured hats. The image to the right shows a copy of the ideas from the session, sorted into coloured post it notes. Although there are 8 ideas classified as 'strong' some are very generic or similar, therefore they can be categorised into /Level Crossing Barriers Installed / Entertainment at Crossing (interactive app, floor piano etc.) / Countdown to when light is going to change / Light up phone case, same colour as traffic light / Bracelet vibrates when close to crossing. |
Not all of these ideas individually in the PUGH Matrix because they are incredibly similar to ideas produced by the NUF testing, and do not need to covered twice.
VISUALISATION
Investigative Sketching
In order to help me to mark each idea against the User Requirement Specification (original criteria from the research report) I decided to do does initial test sketches to give me something to refer to during the PUGH matrix, and to solidify the type of features I expected each idea to have. These images can be seen below (click to make them larger)
PUGH Matrix
The PUGH Matrix is the final sorting method being used to refine the 6 best ideas coming from the NUF test and De Bono's Hats.
The design ideas (as numbered across the top of the matrix) and their total scores from the test are as follows,
.
|
1) Archway Traffic Light Installation
2) Auto-quietening Headphones 3) Phone Case Colour Scale 4) Phone Case Metre Reading 5) Constricting Backpack Straps 6) Phone Case Screen Glaze |

-1 0 0 3 -3 |
To conclude, the two strongest ideas to come forward from the PUGH matrix were the Backpack with adjusting straps and the Archway Traffic Light Installation. I will now assess the feasibility of these two ideas.
Feasibility Testing
In conclusion, the backpack is being taken forward to be modelled.

To ConcludeFrom the many ideas brought through from idea generation, just one idea has been able to withstand the various testing and show itself as a feasible and realistic concept. The backpack idea will now be further explored in Idea Development, which involves investigative and explanatory sketching in order to better understand the concept.
